Do you celebrate Lent?

Ash Wednesday this week marked the beginning of the Lenten period, in which people fast or avoid certain types of pleasures. The tradition lasts for 40 days, and imitates the 40-day fast that Jesus Christ dedicated himself to in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-2).

Each year, we give up something to practice self-discipline and that “something” varies from person to person. If you are still unsure on what to give up, Pope Francis suggests abstaining from gossip.

During a homily in Rome, he proclaimed, "Am I a hypocrite who smiles and then turns around to criticize and destroy with my tongue? If, by the end of Lent, we are able to correct this a bit and not go around always criticizing others behind their backs, I assure you (the celebration of) Jesus' resurrection will be more beautiful."

While giving up gossip is on the top of many lists this year, our team has included their own ideas on what to give up as well:

Alex, Intern- "I'm going to give up chocolate."

Faye, Marketing Director- "I gave up all soda."

Mariela, Case Manager- "I'm giving up being late!"

Kaley, Intern- "I'm giving up coffee and gossip."

Austin, Case Manager- "I'm giving up all types of caffeine."

What are you giving up for Lent? I would love to hear about it!
