This week, I visited Saints Academy Private Christian School to donate 120 “Success for Teens” books.
During my visit, I had the pleasure of meeting the school’s founder, Mrs. Vivian Williams. Her story was so inspiring that I wanted to share it with you...
Mrs. Williams used to work for a state of the arts school when she noticed that there were several classes of 39 students of which several from each class scored a 1 on FCAT. That's right, thirty-nine students!
After assessing why the educational needs of so many students was not being met, Mrs. Williams sought to find a viable solution. Thus, with only $100, two teachers, and 20 students, she founded Saints Academy in August '04.
“We believe all students can learn,” says Mrs. Williams. “Providing the right atmosphere.” The results speak for themselves. Today, Saints Academy is fully accredited with 260 students, 30 personnel and a 90% college graduation rate.
Most of the 260 students are from economically disadvantaged families or were turned away from
public schools, but that doesn’t stop them from achieving. Saints Academy graduates have gone on to attend colleges such as Rollins College and Stetson University.
“So many people have given up on these students," Mrs. Williams. "But when they’re 18 years old - I get to see them walk across the graduation stage and make it.”
